This replica of a 1952 MG TD is built on a 1974 VW Beetle frame with a 24kWh pack of seventy-two 100 Ah GBS lithium batteries powering a nine inch Impulse9 series wound DC motor through an Evnetics Soliton1 1000 amp controller. The chassis received a full mechanical restoration including new floor pans, front disk brake conversion, tie rods, axle shafts with CV joints, and all new bearings.
It’s literally a brand new 1974 VW. It has a heavy duty transaxle with a 3.44 rear drive ratio and Kennedy Stage 4 clutch pack mated to the motor by a Rebirth Auto adapter. The heavy gauge fiberglass replica body was produced by Classic Roadsters of Fargo, ND in 1988, and was hand refinished and painted in a modern equivalent of Old English Ivory.
The interior has been completely reupholstered and features custom Speedhut instrumentation and a classic banjo style steering wheel. Headlamp buckets, front turn signals, and grill are genuine MG TD items.
The evTD has a 4kW charger with the EVTV controller that allows for easy modification with a laptop computer. It accepts either 120 or 240 volt AC input, and has a J1772 charge port in addition to a NEMA 6-20 twist lock receptacle for charging from standard outlets.
This classic is a real head turner on the street and always gets lots of attention at car shows. It is great fun to drive and a real throwback to the days of wind in your face open sports car motoring. Three brides have made this their wedding reception getaway vehicle and it has been used as a photo shoot backdrop for a CD cover. Square rigger British styling is always in style.
The evTD is located in Austin, TX and has current Texas title, inspection, and registration. The build process and follow on activities have been captured in the project blog at http://evtd.blogspot.com and all component documentation and wiring diagrams are assembled into a user guide binder. See the EVTV Registry entry at http://registry.evtv.me/view/10 for more photos and details.
Awards include BEST PAINT at the 2012 EVCCON (Electric Vehicle Conversion Convention), third place in the 2013 EVCCON Car Show, and Best in Class at the 2013 IBM Club Car Show and 2015 Cedar Park Cross Country Car & Motorcycle Show.
