Azure Dynamics Force Drive Digital Motor Controller (DMOC) Model 645

This is the Azure Dynamics 3-phase AC Motor Inverter.   This device is controlled by CANbus messages to drive the Seimens 1PV 5135-4WS14-Z AC Induction Motor.

Azure Dynamics was liquidated in November 2012 and we acquired a quantity of these in a liquidation sale. These are orphans as  there is no product support, warranty, or repair services from the manufacturer for this inverter.  

It was specially configured for the Ford eTransit Connect vehicle, and has no software to allow a stand alone operation.  It  requires a Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) to translate driver inputs into appropriate Controller Area Network (CAN) messages to control the inverter.

This is the configuration  used in our VW THING build and it works quite well, developing about 145 horsepower with the Siemens motor..

Permanent Magnet 10 kW BLDC Motor and Controller

This is a very interesting and versatile small permanent magnet brushless DC 3-phase motor/controller combination.  Rated at 10kw, this little powerhouse combination  is capable of up to 20 kw of power with full regenerative braking capability and capable of up to about 21 ft-lbs of torque.

Designed for low voltage applications, it runs on a nominal 48v (40-60v) and the motor weighs just 38 lbs.  This is actually the motor used in the 20Hp electric outboard motor.  The motor is 8 inches in diameter but less than 7 inches long.  Ideal for a go-kart, inboard boat motor, etc.

The controller can handle up to 420 battery amps and puts out up to 840 motor amps. 1 inch keyed shaft.

This CHAdeMO plug with 20 foot heavy duty cable is rated for 500v, 125 Amperes, and 10,000 insertions.  The new connector design is aluminum with acrylic resin paint.  Power pins are 2 AWG tough-copper with silver plated contacts. Seven 18AWG signal wires are rated for 2 amperes.

5kW Configurable Charger 

For budget minded EV builders, the Hangzhou TieCheng charger (TC Charger), also known as the Chennic or Elcon charger (two trading companies that sell it). has emerged as the low cost charger option.  The drawback is that you must select a charge profile when you order it, and it is permanently configured.  It cannot be changed by the end user.  If you make changes to your battery pack and need it to charge to a different voltage, you must send it off  to have it "reprogrammed."  As most EV builders make changes to their battery packs, move chargers between vehicles and builds, this can be very inconveient.

But the power electronics are reasonably good and the charger has been mostly reliable and accurate.  EVTV has now developed an Arduino Due based serial controller that controls this charger through the CAN port on the charger..  We've added a sturdy aluminum enclosure for this to help block EMI/RFI, a DC to DC converter and powerup relay to startup when the charger starts up and isolate our power source from the noisy vehicle 12v system, and added a hardened USB port so you can configure this controller with any laptop with terminal program over USB.

The result is a reasonably priced charger you CAN easily control to change the charge voltage, current, and termination.  And we've made it ridiculously simple.  The controller puts out a serial ASCII one line messege that shows your target voltage, charge current, termination setting, ampere-hours, and kilowatt hours.  You can plug in ANY laptop with ANY serial terminal program to this device and watch it for hours on end - the fun never ends.

36kW MPPT Solar Charge Controller for Tesla Model S Battery

 There are now over ONE BRAZLLIAN different weeny cheap charge controllers in the solar market.  ALL of them are for 24/36/48 vdc and do less than 3 kW.  Worse, ALMOST all of them allow a Photovoltaic Arrary input of a MAXIMUM of 100 or 150vdc.

And almost all currently grid-tied professional solar installations use PV array strings of 400 to 600 vdc.  This allows the use of smaller cables and less line loss on longer cable runs.

We had this controller designed specifically to charge the Tesla Model S full battery pack at up to 400vdc.  And we insisted on a PV array input maximum of 750 vdc.  Bettter it features a whopping 36kW of power putting out up to 100A at 360vdc to your battery.  That means you can FULLY charge a Tesla Model S 85kWh battery pack in less than 3 hours of sunshine.

It's the most powerful solar charge controller we have seen.  It has the highest max PV input voltage.  And we just can't find anything to charge a battery to 400vdc.   Not just at this price point.  At ANY price point.

It's simple.  It's powerful.  And it's selfish.  It does one thing, and it does it very very well.

Brammo  GVM Traction Motor

This is a close variant to the motor BRAMMO uses for their famous motorcycles.  This version produces 40kW peak power (74 Newton Meters/54.5 ft lbs.).  This is a very small, light, powerful liquid cooled motor ideal for motorcycle applications.

 Internal Permanent Magnet AC (IPMAC) motor with six poles and capable of voltages up to 450vdc and currents up to 600A rms.  Produces 52 horsepower at 5000 rpm in a package 7 inches in diameter and 10 inches long weighing just 32 lbs.  That's 2.5kW per kilogram.

We picked up a small number of this from a company who never had them out of the box.  These motors list for over $3500 from BRAMMO.

Our first charger was a Brusa NLG513 model and we use them still in Speedster Redux, the Electric Spyder 550 and the 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman.

These chargers are quite configurable, very high quality fo build, and reliable. They are also largely unsupported here in the U.S. by the manufacturer. So its been awhile since we've purchased any.

Quaife ATB Limited Slip Differential for Tesla Model S

 The QDH2T is a direct replacement for the standard open differential in the Tesla Model S.

Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip differential, the Quaife ATB differential relies on gears rather than clutch plates for its operation. That means it is much smoother in operation.

The ATB differential never locks harshly with a set pre-load of wheel slip across the driven axle, like a conventional LSD. Rather, it automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree, and never locks.

The ATB differential has many benefits over a standard open differential, including maximising traction and minimizing wheelspin, eliminating torque steer and snatching in front wheel drive cars compared to conventional LSD units, and a maintenance-free design which retains the standard oil lubrication.
