Sigineer 15kW  48v Inverter for Tesla Battery Modules

THE MOST POWERFUL 48vdc INVERTER IN THE WORLD 

Battery powered off-grid systems are quite popular and 48vdc is the current voltage of preference.  Unfortunately, most 48vdc inverters are simply a poor match for Tesla Battery Modules.  Why?

The main problem is the Low Voltage Cutoff - the point of battery discharge where the inverter will shut down to protect the battery.  Almost all 48vdc inverters have LVCO in the 42-44v range with a very very few able to handle batteries down to 40v.

Two Tesla Battery Modules in series are pretty much discharged at 38v.  but they are only 50% discharged at 43.2v.  And so with almost all inverters on the market you are leaving 30-50% of your battery capacity on the table.  That means you have to purchase TWICE the battery capacity that you would need if the inverter simply operated down to the 38v cutoff.

The other issue is that many of these inverters will also charge your batteries from AC - the charger is built in.  That's great, but they are traditionally designed for lead acid batteries.  They may support a bewildering array of Pb chemistry types, but ALL of the charge curves they provide are deadly to Tesla Battery Modules.  We advocate charging with a simple bulk current to 50.5volts and NO MORE.
Almost all inverters want to charge to something more like 56 volts with equalization phases as high as 60v.  This will immediately DESTROY your Tesla Battery Module, not over time but the FIRST time it does so.

And of course most 48vdc inverters provide 4kw to 8kw of power max.

We have located an excellent quality 15 kilowatt inverter made in China that can do 45kw for 20 seconds.  It charges at 110 amperes from 240vac.  And we have commissioned them to provide a Low Voltage Cutoff of 38vdc and a charge limit of 50.5vdc - ideally tuned for the Tesla Battery Modules.

With the 15kW model, we introduce a set of FREQUENCY SHIFT contacts.  When used with our ESP32 Battery Module Controller, this lets you easily turn off grid tied inverters used to backcharge your batteries through the inverter when the battery gets full.

Siemens 1PV5135 4WS14 AC Induction Motor

This is perhaps the most unusual AC Induction Motor in the world.  Siemens makes extremely high quality heavy duty AC induction motors - mostly for yachts and busses, but some trains as well.  This motor was specially produced for the Azure Dynamics Ford eTransit Connect project and we obtained a large lot  of these motors, brand new in the box, from the Azure Dynamics liquidation auction.

What is so unusual about these motors is that Siemens typically designs very high voltage (600-750v) three phase AC induction motors.  This motor was specially produced for AZD and is wound for a relatively low 215vdc.  Azure Dynamics used them with a 335v pack using their DMOC645 inverter controller.

These are voltages much more amenable to conversion vehicles.  The motor was tested to 221 foot lbs - 297 Newton Meters at 300v and 400 amps.  This is the equivalent of 134 horsepower.

Liquid cooled: 50% glycol/water at 16 liters/min

This unit is tagged at a nominal voltage of 215 volts and 47 kW continous power at variance with the data sheet on this motor.  It was probably specially wound by Seimens for the Azure Dynamics eTransit Connect project.

TWIN Siemens 1PV5135 4WS14 AC Induction Motor

This is the TWIN version of our popular Siemens 1PV5135 motor.  Matt Hauber developed a technique for marrying these two motors while retaining separate controls and adding a 1 3/4 inch keyed shaft to the front of the motor replacing the small 26 mm splined shaft that comes with these motors normally.  This configuration allows you to use TWO separate controllers to DOUBLE the power into your drive train.

EVTVDue Microcontroller

Arduino has released a new 32-bit ARM based version of their popular microcontroller they call the Arduino Due. It actually has TWO Controller Area Network (CAN) controllers built into it - but no transcievers.

In a stunning second omission, Arduino Due provides NO EEPROM for persistent memory. You can't save variables from one power up to another.

So we have commissioned our own version - The EVTV CANdue Microcontroller.

This single board replaces the fragile micro USB connectors with a single strong Mini-B printer style USB port on the native USB port to the microcontroller.

We've also added a 2Mbit EEPROM chip providing 256 Kbytes of persistent memory to save program data or configuration details. AND most importantly, a Texas Instruments CAN transceiver on the board to enable the CAN controller in the SAM3X microcontroller chip allowing direct CAN communications.

This is the Azure Dynamics 3-phase AC Motor Inverter.   This device is controlled by CANbus messages to drive the Seimens 1PV 5135-4WS14-Z AC Induction Motor.

Azure Dynamics was liquidated in November 2012 and we acquired a quantity of these in a liquidation sale. These are orphans as  there is no product support, warranty, or repair services from the manufacturer for this inverter.  

It was specially configured for the Ford eTransit Connect vehicle, and has no software to allow a stand alone operation.  It  requires a Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) to translate driver inputs into appropriate Controller Area Network (CAN) messages to control the inverter.

This is the configuration  used in our VW THING build and it works quite well, developing about 145 horsepower with the Siemens motor..
