20 kW CHAdeMO Portable Fast Charger
Previous1 of 10Next
20 kW Portable CHAdeMO fast charger.  This unique fast charger for electric vehicles can charge up to 500v at 40 amps.  It is PORTABLE and as easy to move around as a piece of carry on luggage.  But what is UNIQUE about this fast charger is it is the only one we have ever seen that runs off of the conventional 240vac split phase power you already have in your home and/or garage.  You WILL need heavy wiring and a 100amp  circuit breaker as it draws as much as 80 amperes at 240vac.  But the result is a device as easy to plug in as an electric clothes dryer or stove.  This is the first practical CHAdeMO fast charger you can install in your home.   Nissan Leaf owners can fully charge their cars at home or work in as little as 1.5 hours.

Configurable 5kW Charger

5kW Configurable Charger

For budget minded EV builders, the Hangzhou TieCheng charger (TC Charger), also known as the Chennic or Elcon charger (two trading companies that sell it). has emerged as the low cost charger option.  The drawback is that you must select a charge profile when you order it, and it is permanently configured.  It cannot be changed by the end user.  If you make changes to your battery pack and need it to charge to a different voltage, you must send it off  to have it "reprogrammed."  As most EV builders make changes to their battery packs, move chargers between vehicles and builds, this can be very inconveient.

But the power electronics are reasonably good and the charger has been mostly reliable and accurate.  EVTV has now developed an Arduino Due based serial controller that controls this charger through the CAN port on the charger..  We've added a sturdy aluminum enclosure for this to help block EMI/RFI, a DC to DC converter and powerup relay to startup when the charger starts up and isolate our power source from the noisy vehicle 12v system, and added a hardened USB port so you can configure this controller with any laptop with terminal program over USB.

The result is a reasonably priced charger you CAN easily control to change the charge voltage, current, and termination.  And we've made it ridiculously simple.  The controller puts out a serial ASCII one line messege that shows your target voltage, charge current, termination setting, ampere-hours, and kilowatt hours.  You can plug in ANY laptop with ANY serial terminal program to this device and watch it for hours on end - the fun never ends.

Brusa NLG513-U1-O1l Charger
Previous1 of 3Next
Brusa NLG513-U1-O1l 3.3kW Charger

Our first charger was a Brusa NLG513 model and we use them still in Speedster Redux, the Electric Spyder 550 and the 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman.

These chargers are quite configurable, very high quality fo build, and reliable. They are also largely unsupported here in the U.S. by the manufacturer and with the rise of the Euro from 88 cents to 1.35 the price climbed to nearly $4000 each. So its been awhile since we've purchased any.

As part of the Azure Dynamics Liquidation auction we purchased a block lot of 48 of these excellent chargers new in box on a pallet. And so we are able to offer the to our viewers for a limited time at a firesale price. These are currently listed online elsewhere at $2995. We've recently learned the WHOLESALE price on these in quantity 50 is about $2725 USD plus shipping from Switzerland. And Brusa has announced they will discontinue the charger after August 2013.

 3kW Configurable Charger

For budget minded EV builders, the Hangzhou TieCheng charger (TC Charger), also known as the Chennic or Elcon charger (two trading companies that sell it). has emerged as the low cost charger option.  The drawback is that you must select a charge profile when you order it, and it is permanently configured.  It cannot be changed by the end user.  If you make changes to your battery pack and need it to charge to a different voltage, you must send it off for months at an expense of a hundred dollars or so to have it "reprogrammed."  As most EV builders make changes to their battery packs, move chargers between vehicles and builds, this can make a very inexpensive charger into a very expensive lesson in how NOT to save money.

But the power electronics are reasonably good and the charger has been mostly reliable and accurate.  EVTV has developed a controller for this charger allowing you to set it to any voltage, charge current, and termination current you like with any laptop terminal program.  We've added a sturdy aluminum enclosure for this to help block EMI/RFI, a DC to DC converter and powerup relay to startup when the charger starts up and isolate our power source from the noisy vehicle 12v system, and  a hardened USB port .

PowerLab 8 Battery WorkStation
Previous1 of 5Next
We've used this Revolectrix CellPro PowerLab 8 device successfully to charge and discharge individual cells quite automatically. Originally designed for the radio controlled helicopter hobby, this device is up to 1344 watts and so offers some pretty interesting utility in charging, discharging, and bottom balancing individual cells, even fairly large ones.

Used in conjunction with a 12v battery source, the part we like best is its ability to discharge cells at rates up to 30 amperes recovering the energy INTO the 12volt battery.   Additionally, you can do a  constant current/constant voltage discharge to pretty much nail any bottom balance voltage you desire.
