TWIN Siemens 1PV5135 4WS14 AC Induction Motor

This is the TWIN version of our popular Siemens 1PV5135 motor.  Matt Hauber developed a technique for marrying these two motors while retaining separate controls and adding a 1 3/4 inch keyed shaft to the front of the motor replacing the small 26 mm splined shaft that comes with these motors normally.  This configuration allows you to use TWO separate controllers to DOUBLE the power into your drive train. 

This is perhaps the most unusual AC Induction Motor in the world.  Siemens makes extremely high quality heavy duty AC induction motors - mostly for yachts and busses, but some trains as well.  This motor was specially produced for the Azure Dynamics Ford Transit Connect project and we obtained a large lot of 165 of these motors, brand new in the box, from the Azure Dynamics liquidation auction.

What is so unusual about these motors is that Siemens typically designs very high voltage (600-750v) three phase AC inducdtion motors.  This motor was specially produced for AZD and is wound for a relatively low 215vdc.  Azure Dynamics used them with a 335v pack using their DMOC645 inverter controller.

These are voltages much more amenable to conversion vehicles.  The motor was tested to 221 foot lbs at 300v and 400 amps.

Liquid cooled: 50% glycol/water at 16 liters/min
This unit is tagged at a nominal voltage of 215 volts and 47 kW continous power at variance with the data sheet on this motor.  It was probably specially wound by Seimens for the Azure Dynamics eTransit Connect project.

Netgain produced two custom Warp 11 motors for EVTV with larger terminals, improved fan assembly, temperature thermistor, rpm optical pickup hole, in an EVTV green powder coat. 

These motors feature a 1.375 inch 32 spline shaft with a shear strength of 2200lbs instead of the 1.125 inch shafts normall provide for 1100 lbs shear strength.
These splined shafts allow us to couple the two motors together with a 4.75 inch long internal spline coupler and mate the motors with an aluminum billet mating adapter assembly.

1 UQM Powerphase 100 Motor and Inverter

The UQM Powerphase 100 Traction System.  These were received from the CODA vehicle bankruptcy and are essentially new, but have no warranty and no manufacturer support.  We have further arranged to continue supplies of these direct from UQM on the same terms.

This package offers the advantages of a small package with light weight and high power that are the hallmark of the modern permanent magnet three phase motor.

Azure Dynamics Force Drive DMOC 645 Inverter

Azure Dynamics Force Drive Digital Motor Controller (DMOC) Model 645


This is the Azure Dynamics 3-phase AC Motor Inverter.   This device is controlled by CANbus messages to drive the Seimens 1PV 5135-4WS14-Z AC Induction Motor.

Azure Dynamics was liquidated in November 2012 and we acquired a quantity of these in a liquidation sale. These are orphans as  there is no product support, warranty, or repair services from the manufacturer for this inverter.  

It was specially configured for the Ford eTransit Connect vehicle, and has no software to allow a stand alone operation.  It  requires a Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) to translate driver inputs into appropriate Controller Area Network (CAN) messages to control the inverter.

This is the configuration  used in our VW THING build and it works quite well, developing about 145 horsepower with the Siemens motor..

Permanent Magnet 10 kW BLDC Motor and Controller

This is a very interesting and versatile small permanent magnet brushless DC 3-phase motor/controller combination.  Rated at 10kw, this little powerhouse combination  is capable of up to 20 kw of power with full regenerative braking capability and capable of up to about 21 ft-lbs of torque.

Designed for low voltage applications, it runs on a nominal 48v (40-60v) and the motor weighs just 38 lbs.  This is actually the motor used in the 20Hp electric outboard motor.  The motor is 8 inches in diameter but less than 7 inches long.  Ideal for a go-kart, inboard boat motor, etc.


The controller can handle up to 420 battery amps and puts out up to 840 motor amps. 1 inch keyed shaft.

Brammo  GVM Traction Motor

This is a close variant to the motor BRAMMO uses for their famous motorcycles.  This version produces 40kW peak power (74 Newton Meters/54.5 ft lbs.).  This is a very small, light, powerful liquid cooled motor ideal for motorcycle applications.

 Internal Permanent Magnet AC (IPMAC) motor with six poles and capable of voltages up to 450vdc and currents up to 600A rms.  Produces 52 horsepower at 5000 rpm in a package 7 inches in diameter and 10 inches long weighing just 32 lbs.  That's 2.5kW per kilogram.

We picked up a small number of this from a company who never had them out of the box.  These motors list for over $3500 from BRAMMO.

AN-8 Dual Circuit Cooling Kit

 For modern liquid cooled AC motors and inverters, often you will need separate cooling circuits as the inverter and motor operate in different temperature ranges.

It surprises many that you need liquid cooling in an electric car, but modern high powered IGBT power switching circuitry can be smaller, operate better, and last longer if it is liquid cooled.  And getting power out of an electric motor is really about getting the heat out.  And liquid cooling is just many times more effective than air cooling.

But we don't like leaks.  And so at EVTV we use AN fittings and hose ends with nylon braided hose. Properly assembled, these anodized aluminum hose ends will just never let go and they almost never leak.  So we've adopted the hardware used by race and custom car enthusiasts for transmission coolers, for use in our electric cars.  These are the highest quality components avialable.

AN-8 is nominally 1/2 inch hose equivalent while AN-6 corresponds to 3/8 hose.  The larger the hose, the more fluid flows per unit time.  And the more efficient your cooling will be.

WarP 11 Helwig H60 Redtop Brush Kit
Hellwig H60 RedTop Split brush kit for Netgain Motors Warp 11 Motor.  This kit includes 8 Hellwig H60 brushes pre-radiused for the Netgain Warp 11 Commutator and 8 Nord-Lock zinc coated washers.

The H60 is about 2.5 times harder than the old National K49 brushes and features improved commutation due to the split brush design.  This is the ideal brush for street use.
